War and remembrance - Editorial, Richmond Review,  Canada
It is not another holiday on our calendar, not just a matter of trooping cadets and Legionnaires in blazers, wreaths of poppies and the “Last Post” to be quickly dismissed in our rush to distract and entertain ourselves.

Remembrance will continue to be important so long as there are veterans of numerous peacekeeping missions, memories of others who served and gave their lives in more recent conflicts—all but invisible in the public consciousness. Remembrance will continue to be important as long as there is war.

While we’re remembering, let us offer a silent prayer for more than 30 Canadians who died in combat in Afghanistan this year. And for those who serve there still.
