US Article: A History of Protective Clothing In the 1960's, utility line-worker's clothing took its first major change when utilities and other industries began to use the new permanent press cotton/ polyester blends. Cotton /polyester blends, with their permanent press characteristics and better wear life, became a staple of many electric and gas utilities until the late 1970's. That is when the accident histories of electric utilities began being shared in published studies and in cooperative utility safety exchange meetings. Initial studies of accidents, clothing, burn units and fire studies revealed the melting problem in clothing.
