Almost two thirds of the jobs created in recent months were temporary jobs, which pay an average of $390 per week, well below the $523 average for all industries. Most of these temporary jobs do not provide benefits.
The number of part-time jobs has also grown in recent months and now accounts for 18 percent of all employment. The part-time positions pay less per hour than full-time work and also typically do not provide benefits.
High employment and lower real wages will undercut sustained recovery. Without a meaningful job creation and income protection program at the national level, consumer spending will contract and economic growth will erode.
