‘Bad boy’ Wal-Mart comes to St. Paul By Barb Kucera, Workday Minnesota
Wal-Mart, arguably the world’s most anti-union corporation, is coming to St. Paul, a pro-union town, and labor, religious and community activists are not putting out the welcome mat. Instead, hundreds of people demonstrated Wednesday in front of the Midway neighborhood site where the store is under construction.
“It’s a sad day for St. Paul,” Carpenters union representative Harry Melander told the crowd. The group, chanting and carrying signs, formed a long line that marched around the area at Pascal and University where a former K-Mart store is being renovated into the city’s first Wal-Mart.
