Creosote set for restricted use in New York By ALAN SCHER ZAGIER, Naples Daily News, FL
Each year, 825 million pounds of the coal tar derivative are used to protect telephone poles, marine pilings and most of the nation's countless miles of railroad ties from wood-boring pests and foul weather, according to industry estimates.
The vote in New York marks the first successful effort in the United States to legally limit the use and application of creosote. Last year, the European Union, an alliance of 25 nations, enacted a ban on the sale and consumer use of creosote.
The legislation was spearheaded by the New York City District Council of Carpenters, a union whose dockbuilding members complained of skin rashes, nausea, dizziness and other ailments they blamed on creosote exposure.
