Man's injury shows risks undocumented workers take By Martin C. Evans and Amaya LarraNeta, Newsday, NY
Undocumented workers typically earn $10 per hour to mow lawns for homeowners, stack wood at lumberyards, run sprayers and harvesters on farms, prep meals at restaurants and wield nail guns on construction sites.
Construction worksite injuries disproportionately involve Hispanic immigrants, according to the New York City Construction Industry Partnership, a consortium of industry and labor organizations.
The report said Latinos accounted for about 2 in 3 worksite fatalities in New York City in the two-year period ending last September. In the year 2000, immigrants made up about 2 in 5 workplace fatalities in New York State.
Morales and Perdomo said the contractor did not provide scaffolding or other equipment that would have kept Morales from falling. New York State's 'Scaffold Law' requires contractors to provide safety equipment when a job takes workers to dangerous heights.
