Ferries boss defends move to build ships in Europe Dirk Meissner, CP
British Columbians have been subjected to one too many shipbuilding disasters to be tested again as marine-type guinea pigs, the president of B.C. Ferries said Friday.
David Hahn defended the former Crown corporation's move to hire European ship builders to build three new car-passenger ferries in a contract estimated at $500 million. The move has drawn howls of protests from local ship builders, unions, the public and some members of the Liberal government's own backbench who say local jobs and votes will be lost.
But Hahn, an American who was appointed ferries boss in May 2003, invoked images of the failed fast ferry project that cost British Columbians almost $500 million when he said the ferry service needs new ships that can be built on time and on budget.
