Staircase builders throw curves into their designs By EDWARD D. MURPHY, Portland Press Herald, ME
Conley, 36, said one of the master carpenters he apprenticed with told him that staircase builders are a special, and prized, breed.
'He said, 'If you can learn to do stairs, you're never going to lack for work,' because it's one of those things that's going to stump a lot of people in the industry,' Conley said.
In fact, 100 years ago, staircase builders were considered a separate craft in the construction industry, he said. Now, people can buy simple stair systems from home supply stores, but when the design calls for a special staircase, it has to be custom-built.------------------------------------------- posted 10:21 AM :: reference link ::
