Unions could step up and get an A in Phila. By Tom Ferrick Jr., Philadelphia Inquirer
'There is a 10th or 11th grader somewhere who could graduate with training in a trade, be admitted to a bona fide apprentice program, and four years from now be laying pipe, brick, or electrical cable. Isn't that the American dream?'
It sure is.
But apparently it isn't the Building Trades' dream. Response from the unions has been 'tepid, at best,' Nevels said.
My experience is that the membership of Philadelphia's construction unions (with a few exceptions) is almost all white and almost all male - and mostly lives in the burbs.
In contrast, the students who attend Philly's public schools are mostly minority and mostly poor.------------------------------------------- posted 1:01 PM :: reference link ::
