Women's participation in non-traditional sectors has dramatically increased in the past 20 years, due to the 1964 Civil Rights Act, which prohibited discrimination on the basis of sex in employment among other things, said Kary Moss, executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Michigan in Detroit.
'But we have a long way to go,' she said.
'While outright discrimination isn't as prominent as it used to be, we still have to contend with gender stereotypes, access to education and pay equity issues.'
