Labor Presses for Measure to Ease Unionizing - By STEVEN GREENHOUSE, New York Times
With the percentage of workers in unions sinking to 12.5 percent, the lowest in more than 60 years, labor leaders say the right to organize has been severely compromised, especially by aggressive antiunion campaigns that companies mount for organizing drives.
Viewing the climate as right for reversing the decline, the A.F.L.-C.I.O. is sponsoring an organizing summit meeting today, bringing together 700 leaders and organizers to discuss how to recruit more members.
“The freedom to join a union is the key to holding onto the middle class in this country,” said John J. Sweeney, the A.F.L.-C.I.O.’s president. “We think the best antipoverty tool is a union card. Research shows that nearly 60 percent of workers would form a union tomorrow if given the choice.”
