Remodeling costs more here, report says - By JOANNE CLEAVER, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel
Nobody knows what lurks inside the walls of older houses until they're opened up, and inevitably, there are costly surprises, say local contractors. The City of Milwaukee building code requires that any time a 'structural member' of a home is exposed, and more than 50% of the project area is altered, then 100% of the project must be brought up to current code.
Contractors say they routinely uncover convoluted plumbing, inscrutable wiring and shaky antique framing. It all has to be replaced, and that can hit the budget hard.------------------------------------------- posted 6:59 AM :: reference link ::
