Organized labor — chiefly Unite Here! — has tried for more than a decade to organize Foxwoods. A federal appeals court ruling earlier this year that Indian tribes must follow federal labor law, combined with growing worker discontent at Foxwoods, provided the spark that labor organizers did not have in the past.
The union's message to workers has been that through negotiations it can deliver better wages, benefits and working conditions, which dealers say have steadily deteriorated. One dealer said in an interview earlier this week that she is unsure a union will improve the workplace, but at the same time is not satisfied with conditions at Foxwoods.
