Minimum Wage Workers Get Pay Increase - By Leewanna Parker, Blackbelt Gazette
The country's lowest-paid workers got raises Thursday as the federal minimum wage increased 70 cents, from $5.85 to $6.55 an hour. That’s about 2 million Americans getting raises, but the bad news is gas and food prices are swallowing it up, and some small businesses will pass the cost of the wage hike to consumers.
In Alabama, the increase is particularly welcome to low wage earners. It is one of only five states in the union that doesn’t have its own minimum wage law, meaning whatever the fed mandates, that’s what Alabama will pay its lowest paid workers.
