Labour Bosses and Labour Angels by larry zolf In Canada and the United States, the most derogatory term for labour leaders in the free enterprise lexicon is "labour bosses." The Left, of course, has its own favourite epithet "robber barons" for the corporate elite, be they the Rockefellers, the Bronfmans or the Demaraises.
A very long life has taught me to be suspicious of hasty branding. Those who yell "labour bosses" are suggesting that somehow union leaders control all their members as mere puppets. They maintain that labour leaders boss workers around and, what's worse, incite violence, rabble-rouse.
But more astute followers of the capitalist system, be they socialists or free enterprisers like Conrad Black and Brian Mulroney, know better.
