More OSHA Scrutiny For Riskiest Work Sites (washingtonpost.com) About 4.9 million Americans were injured on the job in 2001, and 8,786 died as a result of workplace injuries, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The deaths includes people killed in the terrorism attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. Without them, the number of deaths would have been down 1 percent from the previous year.
