Stadiums shy of goal in hiring Ed Coryell Sr., the business manager of the region's largest construction union, the carpenters' Metropolitan Regional Council, would not disclose his union's makeup. He blamed subcontractors on the job for not reaching out to diversify their workforces.
"We call them... and say, 'How many minorities do you want?' And they say, 'We don't want any today. We'll call when we need it.' And they don't call."
Unlike most unions, the carpenters say they do not have a "hiring hall" that union carpentry firms must tap when they need to add workers.
