Campbell announces “fleece the heartland” strategy Canadian Union of Public Employees BC Division president Barry O'Neill has called the announcement of the privatization of the Coquihalla Highway just one more plank in Gordon Campbell's "fleece the heartland" strategy.

"Slashed health services, closed schools and a tax shift that sends money to Vancouver - now people in the BC interior get to pay for the Coquihalla highway - again," the CUPE president said.

Teamsters set to buy Coquihalla The Teamsters Union wants to take over the operation and maintenance of the Coquihalla Highway from the provincial government.

Coquihalla HighwayOn Tuesday, the provincial government announced plans to privatize the toll highway, offering potential bidders a 55-year contract.

B.C. Teamsters president Don McGill says a contract that long is an attractive investment for the union's pension fund.

" We are always looking for long-term investments, the longer the better," he says. "And what I see is nothing but potential traffic growth over that period of time."

The Teamsters, with more than 20,000 members in B.C and more than 100,000 across Canada, has a pension pool of more than a billion dollars.
