Canada and the U.S. — A 21st Century Partnership It may surprise you to know that Canada is the largest foreign energy supplier to the U.S., providing:
* 94% of your natural gas imports;
* Close to 100% of U.S. electricity imports, and
* More crude and refined oil products than any other foreign supplier (including Saudi Arabia). Indeed the U.S. department of energy calculates Canada's oil reserves are the second largest in the world after Saudi Arabia. Canada is the 9th largest producer of oil at 2.4 million barrels a day and the world's third largest gas producer with 6.4 trillion cubic feet annually.
Indeed, we satisfy 15% of U.S. natural gas consumption.
Naturally, therefore, Canadian gas producers, like some of their U.S. counterparts, are opposed to any congressional legislation mandating Alaskan gas and pipeline subsidies - because of the market distorting effects they could have.
