State of the unions How did unions get started?
In the Middle Ages, unions were called guilds. The shoemakers, candlemakers and other crafts people discovered that if they got together and set a common price, they wouldn't have to compete with each other by lowering their prices.
In the 16th century, the unions began to lobby government and would strike to get what they wanted.
Unions began in the United States in the late 1700s. The famous Boston Tea Party was hosted by a carpenters union, and the Declaration of Independence was signed in Carpenters Hall in Philadelphia, a meeting place for the union.
