Monumental follies - Richard Eyre on tyrants' taste in art Tyrants eliminate human scale: Bokassa's cathedral was to be larger than St Peter's, Ceausescu's palace was to be larger than the Pentagon. It cost the lives of hundreds of building workers who, numbed by cold, fell from the scaffolding and were brushed away like rubble, to be laid out in a room reserved solely for the coffins of the expendable workforce.
