School projects to have job goals
Nationwide, few women and minorities make their living in the construction trades. Akron is no exception.
In the 800-member Akron carpenters union are 27 women and 79 minorities. The 800-strong electricians union has 23 women and 36 minorities.
Union leaders say they have made efforts to attract a more diverse work force. The IBEW sends letters to minority churches. Both the electricians and carpenters unions send members to local schools to encourage students to enter the trades.
Attracting women to construction jobs is especially difficult, the union leaders say.
``I think we need to break the stereotype of women in construction,'' said Steven Kasarnich, executive regional director of the Ohio and Vicinity Regional Council of Carpenters. ``We need to go to junior high schools and tell girls, `It's OK to be a carpenter.' ''
