Another Deadline Set For Troubled Convention Center
PHILADELPHIA The previous self-imposed deadline for all six unions to sign a contract passed at 5 p.m. Monday; the Carpenters union, the largest, has been the main holdout. At the end of a five-hour meeting attended by all the unions except the Carpenters and Teamsters, the board decided Monday night that the problem needed to be solved by July 16. Board members said if no labor deal is signed by then, they will ask the state Legislature to proceed with a bill that puts the state in control of the workers.
Leaders of the other four unions asked the board to let them sign the labor deal and to oust the two other unions out of the building.
"If you tell me the Carpenters and Teamsters are out, I would feel a lot better," said Sam Staten Jr., president of the Laborers union.
