The dirty, little secret about the AFL-CIO and many of its affiliated unions is that they are undemocratic by any significant definition of that term. Their leaders discourage free speech by their members. They suppress criticism and all forms of dissent. They censor their publications to reflect only the official viewpoint. They change the AFL-CIO Constitution by a voice vote at conventions.
