Labour facing difficult future Trade unionists across Canada are marching today in Labour Day parades with much to celebrate, but also much cause for concern.
There was a time when unions were considered illegal conspiracies in this country. Workers took to the streets, fought for their rights, and won passage of the Trade Unions Act in 1872. Now, organized labour is a widely respected and well-established voice in society.
New data from Statistics Canada, released this past week, show union membership has risen to include 4 million Canadians. That's up from 3.9 million last year, and represents 30.5 per cent of all paid employees.------------------------------------------- posted 7:40 AM :: reference link ::
