Ironically, it was the head of the carpenters' union who first suggested a holiday to honor labor. Peter McGuire, the head of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America in 1882, persuaded the members of the Central Labor Union of New York City to take an unpaid holiday to stage a parade and festival."
