Cook approached his union about the cancer and was told most members in his situation had already settled a lawsuit, but Cook never heard anything about it.
His union, which now falls under the Carpenters Union, directed him to the Lainer Law Firm in Houston.
"They were great. They flew out here and videotaped a deposition," said McDonough.
Cook's 21 lawsuits were settled within months.
"Companies knew about the dangers of asbestos and they made a choice to keep it quiet," said Charles Herd, Cook's Houston-based layer.
