PhillyUnions.com has been receiving a large volume of negative correspondence regarding this situation, and it's time for people to understand the REAL facts about The Real World.
As you're undoubtedly aware, the MTV reality TV program The Real World, whose next season was slated to be produced in Philadelphia, just closed shop in the city because of union protests over the show's producers' decision to use non- union labor to build their housing facilities.
Yes, it is disappointing that this major show may not showcase Philadelphia as part of their weekly reality series.
However, what's really disappointing and downright insulting is that the producers of this big budget show would come to our city and TELL us to compromise our standards and even ignore good faith negotiation attempts by our union leaders, who were willing to work out deals that would compete favorably against their non-union labor. In fact, according to Pat Gillespie, business manager of the Philadelphia Building Trades Council, they even ignored an offer by IBEW 98 Business Manager John J. Dougherty to complete the show's electrical work for $1 as an incentive to negotiate!
