Jobsite deaths hit high By JERRY WARD, The Calgary Sun
EDMONTON -- The number of job-related deaths hit an all-time high in Alberta last year, Workers' Compensation Board data obtained by the Sun shows. There were 124 fatalities in three categories in 2003, compared to the overall numbers of 98 in 2002, and 106 in 2001.
The previous high was set in 1997 when 120 workers lost their lives, the WCB figures show.
A majority of last year's deaths -- 57 -- were due to what is termed occupational disease involving afflictions like exposure to asbestos and other toxins.
