Caltrans remembers workers killed on the job, calls for careful driving By Anna Oberthur
SACRAMENTO – With the death of a state Department of Transportation painter who fell from the Benicia-Martinez Bridge fresh in their minds, workers, their families and state officials Thursday honored the 160 Caltrans employees who have died on the job since 1924 – and reminded California motorists to drive carefully.
The agency had gone nearly three years without a single death until Mike Feliciano, a 55-year-old Salinas man, was struck and killed by a motorist as he drove home Feb. 25.
Then Wednesday, as Caltrans was preparing for its annual memorial service in front of the state Capitol, William Calloway fell to his death. The 50-year-old Benicia man was a structural steel painter for Caltrans.
