Compensate for asbestos exposure, miners say CBC - Newfoundland & Labrador
The Baie Verte miners were members of the United Steelworkers of America. Union representative Andy King says people at the two mines faced similar risks.
"On a humanitarian and justice basis, they're identical," he says. "In terms of the devastation that's happened to people, when they lose a loved one due to cancer, that's similar."
"Asbestos and radiation are both well know carcinogens," King says. "The only differences must be one of timing and politics."
Randy Collins, the New Democratic MHA from Labrador West, has called on the government to conduct a full medical study of the miners to see how many are developing asbestos-related illnesses. He says a review conducted two years ago was biased in favour of the asbestos industry.
