TALLEVAST POLLUTION - Owner assures factory site safe By Kevin O'Horan, Bradenton Herald, FL
"Prior to WPI occupying the site in 2000, the building interiors were essentially gutted," said Jerry Eddis, WPI's president.
"All ceiling materials - tiles, grids, insulation, HVAC, air handlers, carpeting, etc. - were removed and disposed of off-site."
One reason they were able to gut the building is the difference in operations. Where American Beryllium once ground, drilled and otherwise machined the prized but toxic metal into aerospace parts, WPI now pumps out more down-to-earth wire and cable connectors.
Of course, the cleansing and change in operations don't necessarily make the site a safe workplace, experts caution, just a different workplace.
And one under the watchful eye of OSHA.
As was American Beryllium.
Once.
