UMWA CALLS FOR TWO-DAY COAL MINE MEMORIAL BY JIM MUIR, The Southern Illinoisan
Federal bankruptcy judge William Howard is expected to rule Tuesday on a request by Horizon Natural Resources, as part of a bankruptcy reorganization plan, to cut the health care benefits of UMW retirees covered under the 1992 Coal Act, a federal statute enacted to prevent coal operators from abandoning their retirees.
The decision will affect more than 250 working miners at the Zeigler 11 mine near Coulterville and hundreds of retired coal miners that previously worked for Old Ben Coal Co. and Zeigler Coal Co.
The significance of the decision has prompted the UMWA to call a nationwide two-day memorial, shutting down all the union mines in the United States Tuesday and Wednesday. The union is also chartering scores of buses -- several from Southern Illinois -- to make the trip to Lexington to attend the court hearing.
