Chicago Scrutinizes Problems At Baseball’s Wrigley Field By Tudor Hampton, ENR
Chicago officials are studying recent repairs made to Wrigley Field, the Cubs’ 90-year-old baseball park, following three incidents this summer when chunks of delaminated concrete fell from underneath upper-level seating stands. The mishaps came in quick succession but did not cause injury or compromise the structural integrity of the ballpark, according to engineers representing the owner.
Small chunks of precast concrete fell from locations at elevations between 40 ft and 80 ft on June 9, July 16 and July 22. The 4-in.-thick, precast concrete slabs support upper-level seats and span between structural steel trusses and private box suites that cantilever over the park’s lower level.
