TROUBLES PASSED By Keith Darcé, Times Picayune, LA
After a rough period in the 1990s, the Avondale shipyard is taking steps to bolster productivity, improve safety and develop innovative building techniques
The shipyard also has distanced itself from a long history of worker accidents and safety problems.
In the past decade, Avondale was the deadliest big ship builder in the nation, with 12 work-related fatalities between 1990 and 2000. The company's shoddy safety record eventually became the focus of a campaign by workers to unionize the yard. The deaths and complaints from workers prompted numerous investigations by the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration. The OSHA investigations resulted in dozens of citations for dangerous scaffolding, exposed electrical wiring and other safety violations, and more than $400,000 in fines.
