Women trading places with tool time guys By KYRA HOGGAN, CALGARY SUN
Liz Bryant, director of education and employment programs with the YWCA, says women are giving 'guy-work' a go -- and succeeding.
'We started our training program back in '97, because we saw a gap in the labour market,' she says.
'There was a shortage of skilled labourers, and women were interested, but they faced some real barriers.'
With construction as one of the province's largest employers, the shortage of skilled tradespeople ended up working to women's advantage because companies became more willing to look at an untapped source of labour.
'We saw that opportunity and thought (training women for trades) was an excellent way to address a labour market issue, and also a societal issue,' she says.
