All the president's mien By ILONA AMOS, The Scotsman, UK
Satire is a valid form of political comment, and it’s something that we can be proud we do so well in Britain. Private Eye has been around since the early 1960s, and the 1980s brought the superb Spitting Image (who could forget the simpleton Ronnie Reagan puppet, or the grey John Major?). Now we have Dead Ringers, which picks up where the puppets left off. This half-hour special pokes fun at the situation across the pond, where the most powerful man in the world hopes to unleash another four years of startling soundbites. "Our enemies are innovative and resourceful, and so are we," he said recently. "They never stop thinking about new ways to harm our country and our people, and neither do we."
There may be nothing we can do about it, but at least we get to see the funny side. And perhaps the biggest irony is that, no matter how slick the satire, it’s Dubya himself who always has the best lines. As he said himself, we’d do well not to misunderestimate him.
