Stelco at risk of losing biggest client, mulls changes to bidding process By STEVE ERWIN, CBC News Canada
Both the company and the United Steelworkers want to prevent General Motors from walking away after the union failed to reach a labour deal for a mill that supplies hundreds of thousands of steel annually to the automaker.
GM wanted a tentative deal Thursday - and ratified Monday - for 1,000 workers at Stelco's Lake Erie mill to ensure its steel supplies wouldn't be disrupted by a walkout. GM has already looked elsewhere for its first-quarter steel but was willing to return as a customer from next April to the end of 2006 under a contract worth several hundred million dollars.
A Toronto Star report Thursday suggested the union would consider lifting its right to strike to reassure GM as well as Big Three rivals Ford and DaimlerChrysler.
