WALNUT CREEK / Explosion probe looks at warning system / Workers may not have been aware of location of pipe By Demian Bulwa, San Francisco Chronicle
Before digging anywhere in the Bay Area, state law requires excavators to call the nonprofit Underground Service Alert in Concord, which contacts the owners of any nearby underground pipelines and utilities who use the service.
Those owners must then locate and mark their lines to create a 2-foot buffer zone, or advise workers of their location.
Should those workers come within 2 feet of a marked line, they must dig by hand to expose and protect the utility or pipeline before firing up a backhoe.------------------------------------------- posted 5:19 AM :: reference link ::
