U.S. mine deaths on track to record low By ROGER ALFORD, AP, News & Observer, NC
Fifty-one miners were killed on the job in the United States this year - a record low, if the number holds up.

Preliminary figures from the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration show 25 of the deaths occurred in coal mines and 26 in stone, copper and other types of mines.

Agency spokeswoman Suzy Bohnert said that would make 2004 the least deadly year on record for the mining industry, barring any calamities Friday, the last day of the year.
