Watch, wait and worry The stakes are high for workers at troubled Ypsilanti Visteon plant BY BRYCE G. HOFFMAN, Ann Arbor News, MI
When he was elected president of the union local in 1977, the factory employed 3,400 UAW workers. Today, there are only 872.
Bowen said the decline points to deeper problems in the economy. He said Ypsilanti, with its skilled workforce, educated population and proximity to major interstate highways, is an ideal location for a parts plant.
'If you can't make it there, something is wrong,' Bowen said.
Thinking globally
Morey said there is something wrong, and it is called globalization.
He said the workers in Ypsilanti are as productive as any in the world, and more skilled than many. They are just not willing to work for $1.50 cents an hour.
