State warns about metal- halide lights OregonLive.com
The Oregon Occupational Safety & Health Division announced an official statewide 'hazard alert' Friday about the bright white lights as a result of a two-month investigation into a cracked metal-halide bulb that showered a gym full of employees in the Lake Oswego School District with ultraviolet light on Nov. 12.
About 80 people, mostly teachers attending a four-hour training session, suffered symptoms ranging from peeling skin to eye pain or temporary blindness from exposure to the broken light.
An environmental specialist hired by the state during the investigation estimated people sitting directly under the cracked light would have received a full day's exposure to ultraviolet radiation in just eight minutes.
