AFL-CIO may lose biggest union - By Stephen Franklin, Chicago Tribune
Besides the food workers union, the SEIU's drive is backed by the Teamsters, the Laborers, and Unite Here, the product of a merger between the needle trades and hotel workers unions.
Looking ahead, Stern and others say that if they leave the AFL-CIO they will try to form a coalition among the dissident unions and with like-minded organizations such as the Carpenters Union.
Raising similar complaints as the dissidents about the AFL-CIO, the carpenters quit the labor federation four years ago.
