Memorial honours workers killed on the job - BY KEITH LACEY, NorthernLife.ca, Canada
Paul Forder, CAW's director of government relations, got the loudest applause of the lengthy ceremony, when he stated CEOs of companies who cut corners on health and safety issues should be sent to jail when workers are killed and seriously injured because of corporate decisions.
Since the four workers died 21 years ago, more than 20,000 workers have been killed on the job across Canada and this should outrage labour leaders, politicians and workers, he said.
“Workplace injuries and death are preventable,” he said.
“There is simply no need for families to suffer the outrageous pain and suffering that comes when a loved one is lost.”
When workers are killed on the job they are almost called accidents. This infuriates Forder because almost every investigation reveals a lack of training or serious health hazards as the root cause.
