Accidental death verdict in steelworks blast - by Gareth Llewellyn, Western Mail, ic Wales, United Kingdom
Expert witness Professor James Venart told the inquest this week the likely cause of the fatal explosion would have been akin to throwing 88lb of dynamite into the furnace.
Mr Venart, professor emeritus at the University of New Brunswick, Canada, said the 'super-heating' of water at blast furnace number 5, following a burn-out of some furnace coolers, was the explosion's most probable cause.
'One kilogramme (2.2 lbs) of water superheated releases more energy than if you were to explode one kilogramme of TNT,' Professor Vinart said.
Area technician David Humphrey told how he was sent spinning 70ft in the air in the devastating blast.
