AFL-CIO softens stance on breakaway unions / Dissidents saying they plan to resist Sweeney's overtures - George Raine, San Francisco Chronicle
The first attempt at repairing the breach in the AFL-CIO, rocked recently by the withdrawal of three big dissident unions, did not go well.
AFL-CIO President John Sweeney made an overture to the breakaway unions Thursday, saying they are welcome to participate in state and local federation activities. The offer was promptly criticized by the unions, which noted they always intended to keep working with regional AFL-CIO affiliates.
The hostile reaction of the disaffected unions -- the Teamsters, the United Food and Commercial Workers, and the Service Employees International Union -- underscores the bitterness at the highest levels of organized labor.------------------------------------------- posted 5:06 AM :: reference link ::
