If you are looking for long-term job security, the Association of Bay Area Governments says that Contra Costa County is experiencing a critical shortage of manufacturing workers (refinery personnel, pipe fitters and electricians) that is likely to last another 25 years.
Plumbing and Pipe-Fitting Industry Local Union #38 in San Francisco has an apprenticeship program with on-the-job-training and a waiting list.
Michelle Kolts with the Carpenters Local Union 2236 in Oakland says that right now her union’s laborers are very busy.
"We are the cabinetmaker union and we always look for apprentices and journeymen for residential and commercial jobs. Applicants must be at least 17, with a high school diploma or equivalent.
