Global Asbestos Protests Target Canada - CFMEU Press Releases
Australian workers will join protests around the globe on Friday (Sept 9) against the Canadian Government's ongoing support for the export of asbestos products.
The Canadian Government is one of the leading exporters of asbestos in the world, even though sale of the product is illegal in Canada and strict occupational health and safety rules limit workers' exposure to the mineral. Most of Canada's exports go to developing countries.
Japanese labor unions ask Canada to stop exporting asbestos Japan Today
Three Japanese labor unions including one comprising construction workers requested in a joint action on Friday that Canada, the biggest single supplier of asbestos to Japan, stop exporting the carcinogenic mineral, union officials said.
Representatives of the unions delivered a letter of request to the Canadian Embassy in Tokyo saying that '60% of asbestos used in Japan is imported from Canada. We would like the export promotion policy to be terminated, given the hazardous nature of white asbestos has been confirmed.'
