    Congress close to killing controversial Byrd amendment on softwood lumber - CBC News
    U.S. legislators were on the verge Monday of dumping a contentious law that allows American companies to profit from penalties on imports like Canadian softwood lumber.

    The U.S. House of Representatives, with strong backing from the White House, voted 212-206 to repeal the so-called Byrd amendment as part of a sweeping budget-cutting bill.
