Home Builders, Homeowners, Consumers Tell Senate Commerce Committee: Support Ending Lumber Duties, Comply With NAFTA Obligations - American Consumers for Affordable Homes Ryan Trainer, executive vice president of the International Sleep Products Association (ISPA) representing the U.S. mattress industry, told the committee that current antidumping and countervailing duties are also being collected on softwood lumber components that are essential to constructing internal frames for box springs. He pointed out that mattress producers require components that will not warp, break or squeak over the ten to twenty year life of a mattress. The fine grain and small knot structure on wooden parts from Canada meet these requirements while the coarser grain and larger knots found on U.S. softwood does not.
